So, the other day while doing some research on good quotes about hairstylists, I stumbled upon Wikipedia and searched “hairstyles”. I found quite long and informative (and often hilarious) list of all types of hairstyles. This list made me want to share some and add some that I felt were worthy. Just for fun, or to help let your stylist know what you would like…. I thought I would share! Stay tuned! There will be more to come : )
Bangs/Fringe: Hair that is combed to the front of the head and cut at or above the eyebrows. There are many types of bangs… Side swept bangs, brow-skimming heavy bangs and even short bangs.
Blowout: Wikipedia refers to a blowout as, “Shape-up with hair longer, spiky. Example: Gotti Boys”. Do not get scared next time you go to your stylist and they tell you they are going to give you a fantastic blowout!! The term “Blowout” is more commonly used to describe blow drying the hair to your desired look, whether it be full and wavy (Example: Victoria’s Secret Blowout) or smooth and straight. If your stylist is using a dryer and a brush you are getting a fantastic “blowout”.
Bob: A short haircut in which a weighted area is left to fall between the ears and chin. More likely than not this haircut will be one length. You can also get a bob that is shattered, graduated, or layered, all falling between the ears and chin.
Long Bob: Simple as it sounds… a long version of the “Bob”. To be more specific, the length usually falls between the chin and collar bone.
Buzz Cut: A haircut where the hair is cut short and sheared off with a razor/clippers, to a point that no more than about 3/4’s of an inch of hair remains on all sides.
Comb Over: Think Donald Trump… or hair that is combed from one part of the head to another often to cover up a bald spot.
Crew Cut: Cut usually for men (military men) where the hair on the top of the head is cut relatively short, graduated in length from the longest hair at the front hairline to the shortest at the back of the crown. The hair on the sides and back of the head is usually tapered short, semi-short or medium.
Crop: Crop is a very vague word to describe a haircut. please dont go to your stylist and simply say “i want a crop”… you will get a confused look. Crop refers to a short haircut, and that is all. the last thing you want is a crew cut when you wanted a pixie because you asked for a crop… are you following??? (Pause while you remove this word from your memory)
Devilock: (Lets just say i think this picture could describe this look better than I ever could)

Disconnection: Disconnected haircuts can be any length but feature extreme length changes that are not blended together. Disconnection in a haircut will give it a strong edgy look and usually needs to be styled. (Typically not for the get up and go client.)
Emo Hair/Bangs: I just love Wikipedia’s description so much! “Tends to be dyed black and straightened with a curling iron. Usually very long, with bangs going over the eyes.” And thats that!
Duck Tail: This refers to a short men’s haircut where a section at the nape (base of the neck) is noticeably longer than the rest.
Fauxhawk: This hairstyle is a knock off of a Mohawk, made without shaving or buzzing the hair on the sides of the head. This allows men to have the Mohawk look without having to commit to removing most of their hair.
Feathered Hair: Wikipedia’s definition: “Feathered hair was a hairstyle popular in the 1970s and the early 1980s with men and women, the hair was grown long on both sides (normally covering the ears, although it could be shoulder length) unlayered (although some men with curly hair did have it layered) with either a side or a centre parting.” I say, Just look at a picture of Farrah Fawcett.
Finger Wave: A method of setting the hair in an “S” shaped wave pattern using lots of gel (or gellac for those Bumble and bumble users) and your fingers Uusually left to dry and combed out.
Braid: French, Fish Tail, Rope…the list of types of braids goes on and on. A Braid is where hair is interweaved using two or more sections into thin locks.
Rhianna Cut: When you are “so hard” and need to show it. The Rhianna cut…

Now this represents just a few of the terms that refer to hairstyles and techniques. Often times there will several terms for the virtually the same look. The best color and cuts come from the best consultations. Imagine what can be accomplished if you and your hairstylist spoke the same language. So stay tuned for more terms and definitions. I will attempt to unearth them all.
