“i love you!”, “you rock”, “you have awesome bangs!”
At a She&Him concert these are some of the catcalls fans scream out to front-woman Zooey Deschanel. But why the bangs?
Zooey Deschanel’s bangs are the most sought after bangs in hair salons right now and when you google “Deschanel Bangs” you will get 430,000 results. Deschanel’s stylist herself says, “they want what the haircut conveys, there’s something about bangs that makes you feel cool.”
With other front-women like Jenny Lewis, Chan Marshall, Karen O, Alison Mosshart, and Sharin Foo rocking the bang its no wonder bangs have been dubbed the rock’n'roll haircut of choice.
Bangs in Rock ‘n Roll: A Timeline
- The “invention” of bangs as a women’s hairstyle is credited to a musician turned hairstylist named Ziryab
- In the 1920’s when bangs appeared on the controversial bob they were associated with rebellion
- 1950-60’s bangs were a tandem with rock’n'roll: trendsetters such as Mary Quant adopted the Vidal Sassoon pageboy. Nico telegraphed glacial cool with her full fringe.
- In the 70’s Debbie Harry rocked a DIY-looking mussed up bang that is still being replicated on Courtney Love and Drew Barrymore
- Currently bangs have been the go-to style for an edgy look (Rihanna, Jennifer Lopez, Nicole Richie)
Contrary to popular belief, everyone looks good with a bang. The problem is finding the right bang for an individual face. They can really bring out your eyes and cheek bones, if cut correctly.
If you have a round face, straight across the forehead-bangs can widen yourcheeks making you look puffy.
Long, side-swept bangs will downplay a broad face. An above the eye brow bang will add length to your face and features.
My personal favorite is a bang that sits just below the eyebrow and cut in the shape of an “M” giving the illusion of longer bangs while keeping your ability to see.
For a consultation come into the salon and find out which rock’n'roll inspired bangs will work for you.
