The New Year if off to a great start! For starters, 2011 is the beginning of my 2ed year being bi-coastal. It has been such an adventure to be back in LA so much, the experience has been amazing! I’ve gotten to re-connect with some clients from Pre-NY life, and made some great new clients. I am so lucky to be a part of Studio DNA, while I’m not their regularly, I truly feel like part of the team! I’ve also started at a new salon here in New York, Whittemore House Salon. It’s located in the heart of the West Village, and am equally lucky to be part of what I believe to be the most talented team in NY. www.whitttemorehousesalon.com
This weekend will be the end of NY Fashion Week, and I have been so lucky to be a part of some amazing shows. From young designer Mandy Coon whom I’ve had the opportunity to watch grow from her first season, and she finally made it to Lincoln Center! To the beautiful Men’s collection by Rag & Bone, to CFDA winner Billy Reid to my all time favorite Marc Jacobs led by Guido Palau for Redken. My all time favorite moment was Marilyn Manson’s ‘Beautiful People’ playing down the runway to Marc Jacobs and LA based band Health down the runway for Marc by Marc. Music is such an important part of hair & fashion that I was so proud a designer turned the heat up and kept it Punk Rock! Rock & Roll and Punk has always been a symbolization of liberation, anarchy, and pushing the limit. If you’ve made the investment to visit the salon, take advantage of the time your their. Ask questions, find out what’s new, and try something different. The best part about hair is that it grows back, once you give up the attachment, you will feel so free!
My favorite time to come back to LA is fresh off the NY Fashion Week train in September & February. I’m so inspired and so excited to bring back that inspiration to my chair and your hair. It always gets me thinking about trends and where fashion is going. I recently had the opportunity to attend a screening of Vidal Sassoon the Movie with a Q&A with the man himself accompanied by Michael Gordon, (founder of Bumble & Bumble) and first time director Craig Teper. I was pleased to find myself amongst legends like these, and veteran staff members of Sassoon’s and Bb., which is where I recieved my training and am the stylist today because of these company’s.
What stuck with me the most was the history of Vidal Sasson and the marriage of hair and fashion. British designer Nancy Kwan introduced the ‘mini-skirt’ and partnered with Vidal who chopped of that long hippie hair into a chic 5 points ‘BOB’. Together, these two individuals revolutionized their industry’s and history altogether.
With that said, going into this new year and season I wanted to touch on my favorite new trend. The long ‘BOB’. You’ve seen it on Kate Moss, Freja (my new all time favorite supermodel) Gwyneth Paltrow and many more. It hits the collarbone not your shoulder so you don’t get that flip. Minimal layers, works great with a full fringe or a center parting with long bangs. Less layers keep a strong square shape so even on the long side you see the shape and its a great in between look, if your not sure you want to go shorter or keep growing it. It also feels good to cut off all that dead hair and can make the hair feel and appear Thicker. I love to throw in some Oribe Creme for Style and some Bumble & Bumble Surf Spray, tossle dry with your hands or let air dry for a fuller ‘beachy’ look or blow dry smooth with a round bruch using Oribe Gel Serum and Oribe Royal Blowout on the ends for a smooth shiny full body finish.
Whatever route you want to go, I want to remind you that images are awesome. If you cant put into words what you want but you see a picture, please do not hesitate to bring it in, us hairstylist’s love you for it!
Happy Days are here again, can’t wait to get out of this cold and back to sunny Santa Monica, see you Sunday!
