I came across these photos while google searching “polaroids”.

The photos caught my attention for a couple of reasons; first off I love black and white photography, I love the simplicity off all the photos, and the hair is amazing. I respect the way the hairstyles are so smooth and flawless. These photos really show off well executed styles that shows how hair can be manipulated into anything your mind can imagine.

some simple hair rules

  1. color does not and can not lighten hair that already has color on it.
  2. you can not make someone platinum without bleach! (lightener)
  3. washing too frequently is drying on the hair and scalp.
  4. small frequent trims can and will promote growth.
  5. bangs look good on everybody. (its just about finding the right shape)
  6. anything you do with heat you must also let cool in the same shape/position or it will not stay.
  7. touching your hair throughout the day does make your hair fall flat. (the oils in your hand eventually build up on the hair and weigh it down)

that’s all for now, i’m sure i will think of more later…

Fringe in Rock ‘n Roll

Audra top half“i love you!”, “you rock”, “you have awesome bangs!”

At a She&Him concert these are some of the catcalls fans scream out to front-woman Zooey Deschanel.  But why the bangs?

Zooey Deschanel’s bangs are the most sought after bangs in hair salons right now and when you google “Deschanel Bangs” you will get 430,000 results. Deschanel’s stylist herself says, “they want what the haircut conveys, there’s something about bangs that makes you feel cool.”

With other front-women like Jenny Lewis, Chan Marshall, Karen O, Alison Mosshart, and Sharin Foo rocking the bang its no wonder bangs have been dubbed the rock’n'roll haircut of choice.

Bangs in Rock ‘n Roll: A Timeline

  • The “invention” of bangs as a women’s hairstyle is credited to a musician turned hairstylist named Ziryab
  • In the 1920’s when bangs appeared on the controversial bob they were associated with rebellion
  • 1950-60’s bangs were a tandem with rock’n'roll: trendsetters such as Mary Quant adopted the Vidal Sassoon pageboy. Nico telegraphed glacial cool with her full fringe.
  • In the 70’s Debbie Harry rocked a DIY-looking mussed up bang that is still being replicated on Courtney Love and Drew Barrymore
  • Currently bangs have been the go-to style for an edgy look (Rihanna, Jennifer Lopez, Nicole Richie)

Audra bottom halfContrary to popular belief, everyone looks good with a bang. The problem is finding the right bang for an individual face. They can really bring out your eyes and cheek bones, if cut correctly.

If you have a round face, straight across the forehead-bangs can widen yourcheeks making you look puffy.

Long, side-swept bangs will downplay a broad face. An above the eye brow bang will add length to your face and features.

My personal favorite is a bang that sits just below the eyebrow and cut in the shape of an “M” giving the illusion of longer bangs while keeping your ability to see.

For a consultation come into the salon and find out which rock’n'roll inspired bangs will work for you.

Crop Tops

The androgynous ‘do is hot. It allows you to scream confidence, play with contrasting looks, and have easy to style hair.

When going as short as a typical male haircut make sure to keep femininity around the ears and hairline. Just like you would wear a boxy blazer on top of a cocktail dress.. or some purple platforms with your t-shirt and boyfriend’s fit denim. The key is to keep it androgynous which is a playful balance of both male and female.

Speaking first hand (I went from long to short), I will probably never go back (even though I try every once in a while.) I used to be the girl that woke up an hour early to blow dry and flat iron every day. When it was hot out, I would dread this process… and forget trying to finding the right hair band to just throw it up.   Soon you are overflowing with hair accessories, equipment, product and treatments to manage your mane of hair.

Now, with my short locks (varying between 1-4 inches) I get to wash and go.  Sometimes I will flat iron the long sections of my hair… sometimes curl them… but, for the most part I allow my hair to air dry with a small amount of control serum.

When I went to the other side of the hair spectrum.. I didn’t know what to expect.  At first with all of that hair suddenly gone, I did feel less feminine and a bit of regret set in. I felt myself trying to dress more feminine.  I even pierced my ears so I could wear obnoxious earrings in  to off-set the lack of hair.

But soon I realized that this haircut was a transformation. I found my style.  And the attention I would get from both men and women was different, in a positive way. It set in that this was not just another haircut . I dare anyone to take the leap and see what it does to change your life.

When getting the pixie cut do some research. There are many looks you can go with and various details that need to be taken into consideration depending on face shape, features, hair texture, hair color, etc. Be ready to visit the salon more often once you have this cut.  Men come into the salon every 4-6 weeks to ensure they dont look grown-out and messy.   As opposed to women who visit every 6-8 weeks. The pixie is all about confidence, product, and some feminine fashion accessories to off-set.  Enjoy

Take It All Off

“When it’s hot and swampy out, you don’t want to have to worry about your do. Question is, do you have the spine (and head) to pull off the buzz cut?”

GQ’s Adam Rapoport got me thinking…

Looking through the recent issue of GQ I ran across this article on taking it all off (your hair that is) and feel there are some great points that need to be shared. Whenever you take off a significant amount of hair you can have the feeling of relief like a weight taken off your shoulders.

“There’s something freeing about shaving your head. It’s as if you’re shearing off all the anxieties and other crap that have been weighing you down. It’s a clean start. A statement.” When anybody is going through a rocky point in their life that they just cant shake I always recommend a huge change with hair or grooming. Shaving may be your relief. On a lighter note… talk about a no fuss do. Shave your head and you literally have to do nothing to your hair, or lack thereof. No need for products or styling efforts.

If you are going to go for it… here are a few thing to keep in mind:

  • Don’t do it yourself.  Have it professionally done.  While you may think you’ve followed the curvature of your skull, when you get in the sunlight, it will be obvious that ‘missed’ some spots.  Nothing ruins a look like patchy hair.
  • Fade it. Even with a shaved head, you want the top slightly longer than the sides and back.
  • Speak in numbers. Ask for a 1 or 2 on the sides and back. Maybe a 3 or 4 on the top.
  • Just clippers wont cut it. Unless you want a shaved head forever you will need the cut blended and finished with shears to ensure a nice grow-out.
  • Wait till Friday. Buzz your head on the start of the weekend so you can get some sun on your fair scalp before returning to your daily grind.
  • Use sunscreen. Very important, expecially the first week or so your scalp can then get adjusted. Swap the hair product for sunscreen and hand out by the pool.

A man with a usually full head of hair that shaves his head will always look stylish, fresh and clean. Like Adam Rapoport puts it, “it makes me feel a bit younger, a bit more in control, and who knows, maybe even a bit hipper.”

You can schedule a free consultation with me to see if you have a good head shape and face shape to pull off the buzzed look… and for the remainder of the year i will even offer shaves for $35 (as opposed to my normal men’s cut price of $45).

happy shaving!
