Take It All Off

Picture 049

“When it’s hot and swampy out, you don’t want to have to worry about your do. Question is, do you have the spine (and head) to pull off the buzz cut?”

GQ’s Adam Rapoport got me thinking…

Looking through the recent issue of GQ I ran across this article on taking it all off (your hair that is) and feel there are some great points that need to be shared. Whenever you take off a significant amount of hair you can have the feeling of relief like a weight taken off your shoulders.

“There’s something freeing about shaving your head. It’s as if you’re shearing off all the anxieties and other crap that have been weighing you down. It’s a clean start. A statement.” When anybody is going through a rocky point in their life that they just cant shake I always recommend a huge change with hair or grooming. Shaving may be your relief. On a lighter note… talk about a no fuss do. Shave your head and you literally have to do nothing to your hair, or lack thereof. No need for products or styling efforts.

If you are going to go for it… here are a few thing to keep in mind:

  • Don’t do it yourself.  Have it professionally done.  While you may think you’ve followed the curvature of your skull, when you get in the sunlight, it will be obvious that ‘missed’ some spots.  Nothing ruins a look like patchy hair.
  • Fade it. Even with a shaved head, you want the top slightly longer than the sides and back.
  • Speak in numbers. Ask for a 1 or 2 on the sides and back. Maybe a 3 or 4 on the top.
  • Just clippers wont cut it. Unless you want a shaved head forever you will need the cut blended and finished with shears to ensure a nice grow-out.
  • Wait till Friday. Buzz your head on the start of the weekend so you can get some sun on your fair scalp before returning to your daily grind.
  • Use sunscreen. Very important, expecially the first week or so your scalp can then get adjusted. Swap the hair product for sunscreen and hand out by the pool.

A man with a usually full head of hair that shaves his head will always look stylish, fresh and clean. Like Adam Rapoport puts it, “it makes me feel a bit younger, a bit more in control, and who knows, maybe even a bit hipper.”

You can schedule a free consultation with me to see if you have a good head shape and face shape to pull off the buzzed look… and for the remainder of the year i will even offer shaves for $35 (as opposed to my normal men’s cut price of $45).

happy shaving!

Extensions

Extensions are a great way to add volume, length, color, or even a combination of all to your own hair. There are various types of extension methods used in salons today, all having pros and cons. The Flashpoint (I-Tip) method that I offer to clients is an easy way to add volume and length without the use of any chemicals or glues.

Application: The extensions are applied using a unique cold application method that uses micro links (tubes) to bond the extension hair with the natural hair.

•    The tube is fed onto the natural hair

•    The extension is then fed into the tube along with the natural hair

•    Ensuring the hair and extension are following the natural growth pattern, the tube is then shut and secured

•    The process is completely painless and should take anywhere from 30 minutes to 4 hours to complete

Removal: The Flashpoint extensions must be removed using a special tool to open up the tubes. Once the tubes are open, I just simply slide out the extension and remove the tube. (If the hair is still in good condition you can re-apply the same hair using new tubes.)

Things you should know about the I-Tip method:

•    You must have a consultation before scheduling an appointment for the extensions to get proper care  instructions and determine color, length, texture, and sectioning pattern.

•    The hair we use is 100% human hair and can be treated as such.

•    The extensions can last about 3 months before maintenance is required. The hair can last about 6 months before new hair is required. (This is just an estimation, hair growth is different for everyone and timing will vary)

•    The hair will feel a bit tight the first 2 to 3 days and then become very comfortable and even un-noticable.

•    Your extension appointment must also include a haircut to blend natural hair to the extensions.

Dry Cleaning

Picture 048Dry shampoo’s are making a comeback and in a big way. Various product lines are coming out with new, updated, and lets just be honest, better versions of this old favorite. The two to check out at Studio DNA are Oribe’s “Dry” and Sidlab’s “Magic”.

A closer look at shampooing and dry shampooing; Shampoo’s tend to dry out the hair while they cleanse. The sun, salt water, and chlorine will also dry the hair. With this being said, summer is the most important time to cut back on shampooing. Luckily for those with oily scalps, there is Dry and Magic. Spray Dry into shampooed dry hair to create magnificent volume or spray into dirty hair and see the oils disappear before your eyes. Magic is purely a dry shampoo. Only spray Magic into oily (even extremely oily) hair and enjoy an instant clean feeling without the drying effects of shampoo.

Feel free to visit the salon to take a closer look at Dry and Magic, or schedule a consultation with me to see if dry shampoo could be prescribed as part of your product regimen.

Summer Color

Picture 045

Picture 047 The two trends I am excited about for summer are balayage and pastel color. Balayage is a technique of painting lightener onto strands of hair that the sun would actually “kiss”. This sweeping technique, rather than foiling, allows for that almost child-like hair that looks natural and bright for summer. Foiling is still a great method of getting lightened pieces to pop in your base color, however, balayage is for someone who wants to have that Gisele Bündchen sort of gradual lightening from roots to ends.

Pastel coloring is something I wrote about here on my blog back in February. Fashion houses such as Marc Jacobs, Valentino, Mulberry, and a number of others have been using pastel hair coloring in their ads and on their runways.  Celebrities like Ashley Olsen and Kelly Osbourne are rocking the trend.

So what are you waiting for!?  Pastel coloring is fun and only here for spring and summer so take advantage of it now. When it comes to color trends the worry is always, “if it is just a trend do Iwant to commit to it?” With pastel coloring, there is no commitment. Covering up your pastel color when the rich auburns and chocolate browns are back for winter will be a breeze.
