I've always had a passion for doing hair ever since I cut my first Bob on my favorite doll, so it wasn't a great surprise to my family when I enrolled myself @the Toni & Guy Hairdressing academy. I made the big move out here from BEAUTIFUL Northern CA, in 2007 and have been here since! I love everything about this industry, the creativity, the freedom to express yourself, and, help others express themselves as well, the constant education and evolving styles! I look forward to every chance I get to put a smile on someones face, and that's the best part of this industry!

Lady Gaga’s Love Affair with Hair

” I dont want to change, and I dont want to be ashamed. Im the spirit of my hair, its all the glory that I bear Im my hair. ” – Lady Gaga

So as you all know Lady Gaga is not one to “fit in”…. and for that I LOVE her!! If youre a Gaga fan like me, then you as well have just bought her new album Born This Way, and if not, then do so! 7 Deadly sins in Haircare… #1

Shampooing and Overwashing.

So believe it or not, shampooing your hair may be the cause of your dry hair! Why you ask? Well the truth is most shampoos nowadays are no better than just using plain old bodywash :( yes, I know, its ghastly….

No worries, theres a solution, but in order to understand the whats, whys, and hows, this is possible, here’s a little hair 101. Hair is made up of  Keratin, which is a protein, amino acids, and Cysteine. All of which slowly breaks-down through time, heat styling, and chemical services. The less and less of these components in your hair, the weaker it gets. Don’t overstress though, your hair does have a defense system to keep them in place for as long as possible, and its called the Cuticle (pictured below). Now pay attention to the pic below because you want your hairs cuticle to be as close to compact as possible in order to keep its integrity. The key to keeping your cuticle “closed” lies in the PH of your shampoos and conditioners (4.5-5.5 is the PH of your hair), and they key to keeping your hair “full” of protein, is using products made with proteins… makes sense right?

Unfortunately over-the-counter shampoos and conditioners do not provide your hair with any of these demands. Their PH levels blast open your cuticles and their ingredients only coat your hair and mask the issues by making it “feel” good. Through time all these silicones tend to build up on the hairstrand, overwhelm it and eventually break off :( (

So the lesson here is to look for a shampoo with a PH Level of 4.5-5.5, and packed with keratin protein, cysteine, and amino acids. In order to find these products and make sure the shampoo your purchasing is right for your hair do not be afraid to ask, ask, ask your stylist questions (its what were here for ;) ). And a little research goes a long way too…

okay, okay, I wont leave you completely hanging, a product line I highly recommend is Sojourn, and yes, you can find it at Studio DNA, I’m making it even easier for you :) So stop by and like I said, ask, ask, ask, and I promise you, your hair will love you for it.

Movies, Movies, Movies!! Blockbuster Faves

So, its no secret that I LOVE doing hair, but…. I also LOVE movies!! So much, that I cant help but share my all time blockbuster faves with you guys. Believe me this was no easy task, if you were to ask me tomorrow what my favorite movies were I’d probably go on forever, but, I promise I will make it short and sweet. If you see a movie here you like, or don’t like, feel free to comment :)

”A general who became a slave. A slave who became a gladiator. A gladiator who defied an emperor”. Roman times have always fascinated me, the architecture, and the hair and fashion, but this movie is no history lesson. Its full of action, drama, betrayal, romance, heartache, and hope. This movie had me so wrapped around its little finger that I cried like Ive never cried in a movie before… (other than  Titanic, and recently Nights in Rodanthe… lol ). Such a great cast too, you cant help but fall in love, or even hate the characters. Anyhow, it even won the Oscar for Best Picture in 2000(for obvious reasons ;) ), including Best Actor (Russell Crowe), Best Costume Design, Best Effects, Visual Effects, and Best Sound :)

”In Nazi-occupied France during World War II, a group of Jewish-American soldiers known as “The Basterds” are chosen specifically to spread fear throughout the Third Reich by scalping and brutally killing Nazis.”Other than Avatar and The Hangover, Inglorious Basterds was one of my fave movies in 2009. I was completely disappointed that it lost the Oscar to the The Hurt Locker!! The only movie that beat this one for me was Avatar (Ill get to that later) so needless to say this one is AMAZING!! Definitely Tarantino’s best film yet.  If youre a Tarantino fan like I am you will not be disappointed.

One of the BEST MOVIE OF ALL TIME…. yes, i said it, is AVATAR!! The movie takes place in the future, Jake, a paraplegic war veteran, is brought to another planet, Pandora, which is inhabited by the Na’vi, a humanoid race with their own language and culture, and meets Neytiri, a native of Pandora, and falls in love, therefore conflicting with his mission to infiltrate the Na’vi people with the use of an avatar, to gather intel in order to mine for the precious material scattered throughout their rich woodland, in exchange for the spinal surgery that will fix his legs. This movie is just a trip, honestly its so beautiful and the graphics are so well done, that you dont even need dialogue half of the time to just enjoy it. This is a movie that will be around forever and will continue to inspire generations to come.

James Cameron’s Titanic is another one of the BEST MOVIES OF ALL TIME :) Seriously the man knows how to make a movie. Jack and Rose are starcrossed lovers from differant backgrounds and financial status, but their connection and influence on one another runs as deep as the ocean where the Titanic meets its glorious end on its maiden voyage. Its a love story as timeless as Romeo and Juliet, needless to say I laughed, I cursed, I fell in love, and I cried.

“Man, I see in fight club the strongest and smartest men who’ve ever lived. I see all this potential, and I see squandering. God damn it, an entire generation pumping gas, waiting tables; slaves with white collars. Advertising has us chasing cars and clothes, working jobs we hate so we can buy shit we don’t need. We’re the middle children of history, man. No purpose or place. We have no Great War. No Great Depression. Our Great War’s a spiritual war… our Great Depression is our lives. We’ve all been raised on television to believe that one day we’d all be millionaires, and movie gods, and rock stars. But we won’t. And we’re slowly learning that fact. And we’re very, very pissed off.” (Tyler Durden) I loved every minute of this movie, Edward Norton + Brad Pitt = AMAZING!

Fall is my favorite time of year, it gets dark early, the weather is nice and chill, and its the perfect time of year to cuddle on the couch grab some popcorn and step into a differant world :)
