Studio DNA to Donate Hair to Soak up Oil and Help Save Gulf Coast

oil-hair-mats-help-clean-up-ocean-beach-ca1CHECK OUT CNN VIDEO

The first thing that most people notice when meeting me is my strong Southern Accent. Although I have been a west coaster now for 6 years, I still carry a serious southern drawl.  The reason, I was raised in South Mississippi, just about 50 miles from the Gulf Coast.

Being a South Mississippian, I have really been deeply saddened by the news of the oil spill. I know a lot of people who will both be personally and professionally devastated by what has happened out in the gulf, not to mention all of the wildlife and vegetation that will be affected in this horrific spill.

Being 2,000 miles away living in beautiful California, it is hard to watch something like this happen to my homeland. I have been constantly praying for the coast, but living so far away it feels like there is nothing I can do to help.

The feeling of helplessness changed this morning.  When I woke up, I checked my email and saw that a friend who lives in NYC sent me this CNN Link.

The link is about hair salons throughout the United States and Canada that are sending hair scrapings to the Gulf Coast.  They are using the hair; building boons and having them soak up the oil.   One pound of hair will soak up one quart of oil.

As soon as I got this link I called my amazing employers at Studio DNA, and of course they agreed to get in on the action!!!!!!!  In fact, they were already waiting for the shipping address to get the process started.

We might live 2,000 miles away, but we are not unable to do our part and contribute to the Gulf Coast!!!!  Make an appointment now at Studio DNA Salon, get those dead ends of your hair trimmed away, and help save our Gulf Coast states.  In fact, mention “The Gulf Coast” at check out and Studio DNA will give you 10% off your products!

Cutting My Hair Helps it Grow Faster?

gisele-long-wavyThere is an old saying that says, “The more often you cut your hair the faster it will grow.”  While this isn’t a completely factual statement it is not completely false either.

As a stylist I find that when most people decide they want to grow their hair long they think the best plan of attack is just to go ages without cutting; simply let it grow.  People think that only once it reaches a certain length, then they can start trimming the ends and give their hair some shape.  Problem is, this theory just won’t work.  While getting your hair cut on a regular basis won’t make it grow faster, it will keep the ends healthy and prevent them from splitting, and breaking.

I see clients all of the time in the salon telling me they have been growing their hair for a year and it just won’t grow. crystalgayle1-755223While everybody’s head of hair is different (some people are simply capable of growing their hair longer than others i.e. Crystal Gayle), the idea that getting regular haircuts will result in slowing or halting the growth of your hair is simply false.  In fact, the reason why most people hit that wall is because they haven’t maintained their hair with regular trims and the ends of the hair are just unhealthy and brittle.  The result is breakage and split ends.

Here is my suggested plan for growing the long hair of your dreams.  Find a stylist that you like and stick with him/her.  Find someone you feel comfortable with and trust.  This person will understand your game plan and help strategize the best plan of attack.  Best places to find a stylist are referrals through friends or online searches such as yelp.  When you go to the salon, let them evaluate your hair and trust their recommendation.  Remember, the stylist is the professional. The first cut might be a big one, but when growing your hair, you must think long term, not short term.  After cutting off dry brittle and broken hair, you can effectively start the growing process. You must then commit to going in every 8 weeks to the salon for your maintenance trims.  During these appointments, your stylist will merely dust the ends off your hair and keep it fresh. The average person has hair growth of 1/2″ every month, you will find your hair will grow like a weed and healthier than you ever imagined once you start keeping the ends tidy and trimmed.

39684Other important things to consider are the hair products that you use.  You must invest in professional shampoos and conditioners.  Your hair is the only accessory that you where every day and you need to make the investment for proper hair care.  Let your trusted stylist recommend and prescribe the professional products that will keep your hair in a healthy condition.

Long hair is sexy and beautiful.  But there is nothing beautiful about unhealthy long hair!  If you want to grow your hair out and have the hair you have always desired, trust me, follow these steps and you won’t be disappointed!

Bang it Out for Spring 2010

Hollywood_hair_portrait“She Bangs, She bangs”!!!

Apparently Ricky Martin isn’t the only one coming out of the closet this spring, so are all sorts of hot fun fringe, face flattering looks, and hair trends.

During these warmer months I notice that most of my clients are looking to freshen up their look. Often times I explain that cutting a bang is the easiest and quickest way to reinvent one’s look.  It can be drastic or subtle and not as much commitment as one might think.

camronBangs or fringe (industry term) are so current, youthful, sexy and fresh. Even if you cut your fringe short and decide to grow it out, you get to rock so many awesome and fun in-between looks! One thing I offer my clients is complimentary bang trims in between haircuts. This also helps maintain the salon ready look at all times.

Straight across, asymmetrical, side swept, choppy, pointy, wispy, baby, or blended fringe are all things that are totally hot and so 2010!!!

So if you were to be sitting in my chair my recommendation for this spring would be BANG IT OUT!!!!

Rain Rain Go Away or Give Us Relief from a Rainy Hair Day?!

bad_hair_day_2101367300So let’s face it, those of us that live in the City of Angels don’t exactly know what to do when it is raining outside. We have a hard time driving, going to work, and we especially have a hard time when it comes to styling our hair. Here in L.A. we are so spoiled by the lack of humidty, which as a gal from South Mississippi, I know that humidity makes everyday a questionable hair day.  I have noticed that living in Los Angeles these past six years, is that “almost” everyday in this climate and weather conditions is practically a guarantee for an outstanding hair day.

Not to sound ungrateful for this much needed rain, but in an unprepared city we need to find solutions on how to deal with the rain when it comes to our hair – and fast.

First we can start with product usage. Thank goodness that major hair care companies have found ways to combat weather conditions with products.  They help improve our hair when the hair is suddenly moist.  One of my favorite “can’t-live-without” rainy day products is the Oribe Hair Care – Impermeable Anti-Humidity Hair Spray.  This ultra-luxe range keeps hair looking beautiful and healthy for6a00e5504d1b2f88330120a523cc55970b-500wi simply gorgeous hair. This anti-humidity finishing spray shields hair from frizz on the sultriest of days (and nights), protecting sleek blowouts and perfect curls alike.

061008_hair11_sp08_400x400Another thing to consider on these rainy humid days is hair frizz! Bumble and bumble gives us their “Defrizz” product. It does what it says (and more): protects against frizz, acts as a barrier to humidity and leaves hair soft, silky and flyaway-free.  Bumble and bumble also has their signature Surf Spray. This spray provides that beachy texture that you get on the beach. Sexy, salty, sun-dried, windswept styles – whenever, wherever. Perfect for weather, giving the hair an awesome texture. With these sorts of products anyone can tackle even the gloomiest of days.

Now that we’ve talked about product, let’s talk about some basic DIY styles. I would like to start with the messy low bun, it’s simple, it’s easy and the key is that it is MESSY. You don’t have to be a rockstar hair pro to achieve this look, you can simply apply product, rough dry your hair for natural texture and put our hair in a low pony tail either in the back or on the side. Twist the hair and pin it. This look is also so current, we have seen tons of celebrities strut their stuff on the red carpet wearing this modern, chic, and simple style.mk-braid

Braids are also making a huge comeback! Even if you don’t know how to french braid, the standard american braids are all over the top runways and in the pages of the current Vogue magazines. Messy hair with a braid looks good and keeps your look current and fresh. Remember y’all, it’s the imperfections that make the hair perfect!

emma-roberts-hair-messy-ponytail-bunAlso, texture is in right now! Even just applying a little anti humidity product, the surf spray, or a little defrizz, or cocktailing all 3, you can finger through your hair and let it air dry, and still manage to have a fierce hair day. You can accompany this style with barrettes, headbands, or a cute hat  (also huge trends).

Basically y’all, the ultimate goal is to embrace the rain, embrace the humidity and make it work for you! Rain definitely puts a damper on things like hiking, and outside dining, but it doesn’t have to interfere with your confidence and appearance.
